I’ve had a few requests for recipes for various things. I find that I tend to find interesting recipes online and then end up combining them and making up my own thing along the way. So, I’m going to post a few recipes here and ask YOU to add a recipe of your own via the comments section. So all those who’ve offered soup recipes etc, bring ‘em on! And all those lurkers out there who read but never comment – time to come out of the woodwork and join the party! I know Bev, my mom-in-law, has a great leek and potato soup that my hubby loves (the only soup he really loves!) – so that is one worth sharing here, Bev
Cinnamon Buns
I ended up using this site’s recipe mostly: Ooey Gooey Cinnamon Bun’s – but the second time I made them, I went easy on the ooey-gooey sauce as I found it too rich. Also, I added cinnamon to the actual dough itself to boost the cinnamon-i-ness. I like the comments/review section at the end of the recipe – they offered great tips. Combine these with the tips I wrote about in an earlier post and you should have successful cinnamon buns too! Write in and tell me how they went and how the fam received them!
Bread
Here are a few sites that I used to make bread. My sister makes a simpler bread that doesn’t include oil and honey and therefore is cheaper to make. I’ve had her Challah and her other breads before and they are mmmmmmm-mmmmmmmm, so Kelly – post here please and share your secrets!
100% Honey Whole Wheat bread: This bread features in a recent post – I’m not sure what kind of difference the egg makes – except that it seemed to be a heaver loaf. But, I’m so new at this, I’m not sure if it was the egg, the nutty wheat flour or my heavy-handedness that made the difference! Also, I didn’t read the instructions all the way through, so never ended up making it by rolling it up the way they suggest. Perhaps I will try that the next loaf and see what difference it makes!
Whole wheat bread Hayes recipe: This has got to be good with the name Hayes!
This is the bread recipe I’ve used the most recently (the rolls in this recent post are made from it). I even made it with molasses this weekend (cheaper than honey!). For some reason it took forever to rise (colder weather, for sure and perhaps not so great yeast this time). But, I’m learning to relax and let the bread rise as it needs to. I made rolls with this yesterday. And today I made a really delicious seedloaf (well, seeded top – next time I’ll add seeds to the dough too). We all had some for supper and they hardly needed much before they were stuffed full. Another bonus of home made bread is that it fills you up quicker and for longer.
Our Veggie Soup: No website for this one! Just in case you’re interested, our veggie soup is simple and yet delicious. I tend to chuck whatever veggies we have into it, but it tends to taste the best if these veggies form the base: butternut, sweet potato, celery, turnips, onions/leeks. I add water, Ina Parmen’s veggie stock (or fresh chicken stock if I have) and let it boil away. Season with a bit of salt, pepper and Ina’s Garlic and Herb, liquidise it when cooked through (I use our Braun handheld liquidiser) and this is one yummy soup!

Sunday is Taco Night at our house! And this is our frugal Vegetarian Taco or Burrito Filling recipe (originally from the Miserly Moms website).
This is a great, cheap recipe that makes a good taco/burrito filling, or can be served over rice or tortilla chips.
4 cans black beans (or use cooked dried beans)
2 can corns
2 T. taco seasoning
2 small onion, diced
2 T. diced green chiles
2 T. oil
a little bit of lemon juice
Sauté onion in oil until soft. Add chiles and corn. Stir for 1-2 minutes.
Add taco seasoning and black beans. Add lemon juice. Heat through.
Serve with taco shells, tortillas, rice… however you choose.
When we make this, we mix the ingredients up with cooked rice to stretch it, then serve it in corn tortillas, lightly fried in olive oil or coconut oil and shaped into taco shells. We then top with whatever taco toppings we have on hand: cheese, tomatoes, salsa, sour cream…
My family gives this recipe:
11 thumbs up (A+)
OK…I like quick, so here is my quick recipe for something everyone in my family will eat:
One package tater tots. (You can dice your own potatoes, too).
An onion.
A half pound of bacon. (It tastes better if you fry it first)
Nine eggs.
Package shredded cheese (I usually shred my own.)
Mix together, top with a little extra cheeses and bake in a 400 degree oven until done, about thirty minutes.
I like to pour salsa all over mine. But then, I do that to mac and cheese, too.
