Spring 2010

There are many things that excite me.  Perhaps too many – especially in the school girly, giddy with exhilaration, kind of way.  Not quite becoming for a 30-something-grey-hairs-appearing-often-frazzled mom!  But, it is how it is, and if I can’t restrain it, I may as well embrace it!

One of these simple pleasures that ignites ripples of bubbling anticipation in my stomach is the promise of Spring.

I’m not a winter girl.  Lately, I’ve been very grateful that our winters are actually quite mild, compared to the rest of the world, and I’ve even embraced some of winter’s special treats like stories by the fireplace and a toasty bed, warmed by our 12-year old electric blanket.  But, even then, I don’t like waking up at 7am and finding that it is still dark outside.  I don’t like having the kids run their bath at 5:30 to see the sun disappearing behind the mountain and minutes later throwing a dark blanket across our skies.  I don’t like hopping from one foot to the other in a desperate attempt to warm up after a shower.  Layers of clothing?  Closed shoes all day? Winter weight? Endless days of rain, rain, rain?  Urgh.  Not my thing.

I’m more a summer girl.  Despite the sweat-dripping hot days we can have.  Despite the lethargy that sometimes accompanies those days.  Despite the body-image-crisis that seems to coincide with the necessity of wearing fewer clothes.  Despite these things, I love summer.  And the first hint of summer is …

Spring…

I think, after 18 years of knowing me, Craig has earned the right to roll his eyes when I suddenly gasp, "Honey! Look! It’s 6:30pm and the sun is still up!"  But, despite the predictability of my behaviour, I still enjoy that excitement as if it were brand new.

So, this month holds loads of little spots of joy for me, as creation starts to show buds of new life and brighter colours in celebration of warmer, and longer, days ahead.  And this year, it started in August, as we were driving to a Lunch Bunch outing in Kommetjie, we noticed the first Spring flowers carpeting the verges of our route.  Even the kids were subjected to mommy’s exclamations of joy!  On arriving at our destination we were greeted with more beautiful glimmers of spring flowers.  And the kids loved the fresh air and bright skies.  Even the nip in the air did not dampen my little-girl-thrill for summer ahead!  Walking along the Slangkop walkway with flowers blossoming on either side of us, was a treat indeed.

And now I look forward to more glimmers of Spring, and promises of Summer … the sun going down later and getting up earlier; the first buds on our back garden tree swelling and then exploding into vivid green splashes of fresh Spring leaves; the blossoms peaking over our neighbour’s fence; the warmer weather; the smell of freshly cut lawn … even the 5 minutes less it will take to dress a wriggly toddler in the mornings!

Ah!  The anticipation of something so close is invigorating indeed!

What is your favourite thing about Spring or Summer?  Or, if you’re a Winter baby – tell us why!  Maybe you can convert me to the dark side!

LB Outing: School of … magic

Yes, the Lunch Bunchers went to the school of magic.  Not the dodgy variety – just the sleight of hand version.  But, more specifically to learn about the science of colour and light at the Imagination Centre.2010_06_08

Organising themselves around the small tables was their first task.  Shortly after that, after being introduced to Prof Bayla, they began their colour mixing exercise. 2010_06_081

Prof Bayla introduced them to many different aspects of colour and light from a scientific basis.  He kept the tone light by not going into too much background explanation or detail.  He did a brilliant job of teaching the group – we had kids from Red Cross with us, so our group’s age range was 4-12.  Getting it right with such a varied age group is difficult to say the least, but he managed it well!  His explanations were entertaining and his overgrown teenager lingo and body language went down a treat with the kids!  Soon he sent the kids around the room to the varied stations exhibiting fun activities or facts about light and colour.  The littlies played around with colour boards, drawing pictures in the black gel surface to create rainbow pictures.2010_06_082

The older kids played around with fun illusion activities.  Their favourite was the mirror number-dot exercise.  They had to join the dots by looking at the mirror image of their paper – quite difficult!2010_06_083

For some of the kids, these mirrors were the best – turning us into the dwarf version of ourselves or the me-on-stilts look.   2010_06_084

We’d recently watched Pollyanna with the kids, so looking at real life prisms was a highlight for my kids.  They loved looking at the prism-induced rainbowed room. Ben and Monique also got the added honour of being the official Prof Bayla Assistants, donning real mad scientist white coats! :) 2010_06_085

To end the morning at the Imagination Centre, the kids were treated to a mini magic show.  Prof Bayla entertained the kids with some fun light shows – including a mini laser show.      2010_06_086

Then Carlo came out with his bag of tricks.  He kindly chose Kiera to be his assistant, which she absolutely loved!  Despite some trick failure, the kids had loads of fun and laughs too!

Last, but not least, we were presented with a fun juggling act.  Impressive stuff, especially considering that this young man taught himself to juggle in his township simply by juggling stones.

Nature Study

Thursday was our Wednesday.  Our weekly plan has Wednesday marked out for a visit to Kirstenbosch to do our nature study time and enjoy the outdoors; read a chapter from our read alouds and look at our art books.  That is, if it doesn’t rain on a Wednesday.  And it has rained.  For the past 3 weeks!  So, this Thursday we combined our playdate with a visit to Kirstenbosch.

The kids and I got there about 45 mins earlier than the other moms.  We settled under the trees and looked at one of our art books.  Come Look with Me art books are great: alongside each picture are questions that prompt the reader to really think about the painting from all angles.  We looked at this beautiful painting, commissioned by the railway in the US when it made its way through Pennsylvania.

We had such a fun and interesting discussion about the painting itself as well as what painting landscapes must be like.  And since we were enjoying such a beautiful landscape ourselves, the kids got to draw what they saw in the gardens.  A great introduction to landscape drawing….

And, if I ended this post there, you’d think that our homeschooling days are just oh so idyllic.

But the truth is the kids had oversaturation by that stage and drawing landscapes were not on their agenda of Fun Things To Do…

So, instead of beautiful well planned sketches of landscapes, Kiera scribbled this out …

And Katie decided the naked boy toddler across the way was landscape enough …

But, at least Sam got into it and drew a great 3-year old version of a guinea fowl…

And then they all threw down their pencils and ran off to play.  Sigh!  Well, I tried!

A little later the kids were joined by their friends and the rest of the afternoon was spent making new friends with other kids; discovering tadpoles; climbing trees and wading in the river.  And for us moms?  A lovely relaxing hour of chatting.

We live in a beautiful place and that’s something I never want to take for granted.  Thank You Lord!

Cinderella on Ice

image There is something so special about watching my girls enjoy a brilliant stage performance – especially when they are both so enthralled by the beauty of the stage.

Ever since they saw the adverts for Cinderella on Ice, they’ve been asking to go.  Thank goodness for cheap seats (well, cheap-ish!) and a generous granny :)

We got there super early, so the girls enjoyed a shared smoothie…

And a long “before show” scrutiny of the programme…

Before the show…

During the show …

The first thing that the kids noticed was that there was no talking!  Which meant that there were plenty more questions to ask, throughout the show.  Through OUT the show!  Actually, they had quite a few questions that I couldn’t answer.  The lack of talking means loads of interpretation on the audience’s part and so, sometimes, it took a whole lot of “I don’t know” before I knew what was going on!

But, despite being the only person in the audience with running commentary, it was such fun watching the kids faces light up with awe and excitement at the beautiful ice dancing.  And the ice dancing was pretty impressive too!

At interval, the girls swooped and glided all over the Artscape theatre floors.  Oh I remember those days of childhood re-enactment of all things theatrical and exciting!  So, despite the fact that they nearly ended up in the ER with hot coffee burns from the various adult elbows they nearly knocked on numerous occasions, I couldn’t help but smile.

The most impressive move – definitely the highlight of the whole show – was when one male dancer lifted a female onto his head – she lay horizontal to the ground on top of his head, while he spun around in those amazing ice-skating pirouette spins ice skaters do… you know those ones when they spin so fast they become a blur?  Yip, one of those … WITHOUT holding her at all.  No one was holding anyone.  That was definitely standing ovation, jaw dropping stuff!

The theatre bug has definitely bitten these two!  Like mother like daughters :)
